Houston's Jewish community gathers to remember lives lost in Hamas' attacks on Israel

HOUSTON — Members of Houston's Jewish community are remembering the massacre in Israel that happened exactly one year ago.

More than 1,100 people were killed. The attack by Hamas terrorists started a war that continues to expand today.

Attendees at Congregation Beth Yeshurun prayed for those who died, those who are still captive and for peace.

Powerful testimony of Oct. 7, 2023 came from a soldier with the Israeli defense force. He was flown to Houston this week to share his story with thousands.

"Houses were burned to the ground. Abandoned dogs were wandering. It was a scene that will stay with me forever," he said.

The service at Congregation Beth Yeshurun wasn't about politics or the war that continues to expand in the Middle East. It was about remembrance; remembering the worst attack on Israel in its history and the worst attack on the Jewish people, they say, since the Holocaust.

"This isn't the opportunity to denounce Palestinians, to talk negatively about others, we hope and pray that they find peace as well. Tonight is about sanctifying life. Life and innocence everywhere and doing all we can do to protect Israel, the one Jewish homeland in this world," said Rabbi Brian Strauss.

Rabbi Strauss said although not all in his congregation may agree with Israel's political leaders, they are united in their desire to see an Israel where the Jewish people can live without fear and in peace.

"God willing, one day, hopefully this year, Israel will finally find peace so that all people in that region can find the peace that they deserve," he said.
