College football national championship weekend expected to generate millions for Houston economy

Any business that feeds off of the sports tourism industry is expected to benefit from the CFB National Championship in Houston this weekend.

HOUSTON — Many local businesses are preparing for tens of thousands of college football fans to flock to Houston for the College Football Playoff National Championship.

"There’s lots to get ready for when you’re inviting over 100,000 people to town," said Janis Burke, CEO of the Harris County Houston Sports Authority.

The Michigan Wolverines will be taking on the Washington Huskies. Their fans are expected to roll into town as early as Friday to cheer on their teams to victory.

“All of the flights from Seattle to Houston, the direct flights were all sold out," explained Burke.

The biggest weekend in college football is expected to generate roughly $200 million in revenue for Houston businesses, including restaurants and hotels.

"Anybody who feeds off of the sports tourism industry, so transportation companies...small businesses," said Burke.

Small business owner Juana Tzoc said she's excited for the crowd.

"I'm ready for it," said Tzoc.

She owns Tacos Y Pupusas Express, which is on the corner of St. Emanuel and McKinney Street. The restaurant is just around the corner from all the action.

Tzoc said she's spent the last week restocking to keep up with the increase in expected foot traffic.

"More meat, more vegetables, we’re going to get ready," said Tzoc.

Preparations are sure to go a long way as the city creates space to make memories that last a lifetime.

"We do sporting events like no other city in the country," said Burke. "We are one of the best in the world and we are rolling out the red carpet, and I know that they are going to leave very pleased with Houston."

Playoff Fan Central at the George R. Brown Convention Center opens Friday and the free concert series at Shell Energy Stadium kicks off Friday night.
