After years of the HOA paying for repairs on fence damaged by storms, this Houston homeowner says she's responsible now

Pauletta Aldridge said the HOA handled previous repairs when it came to Hurricane Ike and Harvey. Now she says the HOA told her she's responsible for damages.

HOUSTON — Pauletta Aldridge has lived in her southwest Houston home for 20 years and throughout all those years she’s lived through major storms.

“We've had damage, from Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Harvey,” said Aldridge.

The fence in her backyard was damaged by both storms and repaired by the homeowner's association. The broken fence lies between her backyard and the neighborhood park.

“After those two major storms, within 72 hours, their crew came over and included out and replaced the fence,” said Aldridge. “I didn't have to call them. They were here.”

This year the fence was damaged again, this time by Hurricane Beryl. Pauletta said no one showed up to repair it, so she called the HOA.

“They just told me that they no longer want to have that expense,” said Pauletta. “It's your responsibility. We don't want it. We won't. We won't maintain it any longer.”

The sudden change caught Pauletta off guard, leaving her frustrated and potentially on the hook for repair costs.

“Just upsets me so for them to say that's not my fence, that's your fence now. But it hasn't been my fence,” said Aldridge.

Pauletta said one of her neighbors who lives along the stretch behind the park decided to fix their broken fence on their own.

She’s been working with a neighbor to fix up part of a fence that belongs to her but doesn't know what she'll do about the other stretch.

Pauletta said she just wants some answers and better communication from the HOA.

KHOU 11 News called the HOA several times. We left a message but haven’t heard back.
