Homeless man sleeping in dumpster dies tragically

A Conroe police officer found a man's body early Tuesday and investigators confirm he'd been sleeping in a dumpster.

CONROE, Texas — A homeless man is dead after being run over by a garbage truck that was emptying the dumpster in which he'd been sleeping, Conroe police said Wednesday.

His body was found early Tuesday morning by a patrol officer in downtown Conroe. He was later identified as 32-year-old William Cody Colburn.

Detectives said Colburn was sleeping in a dumpster that morning when Waste Connections, which handles garbage collection in Conroe, arrived to empty it around 3:20 a.m.

Video from the truck and a nearby business showed Colburn either jumping or falling out of the side of the dumpster as it was being emptied, according to Conroe PD.

Police said Colburn was likely incapacitated as a result of the high fall. The driver, according to police, did not see Colburn had fallen beside the truck and hit him as he drove away from the scene, police said.

Witnesses have been cooperative and no charges have been filed in this investigation, according to Conroe PD.
