'He always called us fellas': Oak Ridge Boys honor George H.W. Bush

They sang for him for years. On Thursday in Houston, The Oak Ridge Boys performed one last time for former President George H.W. Bush.

The Oak Ridge Boys first sang for George H.W. Bush in October of 1983 on the lawn of the White House.

"He said, fellas - he always called us fellas - would you sing me a few songs. I'm a big fan," Joe Bonsall, tenor for the American country and gospel vocal quartet, recalled.

For decades The Oak Ridge Boys sang for the former president.

"What a lot of people may not know is he fancied himself to be a good bass singer. He was not," Bonsall recalled just before singing Thursday morning during a private funeral for Bush in Houston.

George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, will be laid to rest Thursday after the funeral service St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.

Following his funeral, Bush will travel to Spring, where ‘Locomotive 4141,’ a specialized Union Pacific train donning the colors of Air Force One, will carry the President to College Station and to his final resting place alongside Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years who passed in April, and Robin Bush, his 3-year-old daughter who died of leukemia in 1953.
