Christopher Smith, 23, and Junus Hayes, 24, were arrested after robbing a postal worker at gunpoint, according to Precinct 4.

SPRING, Texas — A postal worker was robbed at gunpoint in Spring Tuesday but the gunmen were quickly arrested, according to Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman.

The victim told deputies the robbers were wearing masks when they held him up and stole postal keys on Mount Hunt Drive just before 5:30 p.m.

He was able to give them a description of the vehicle they were driving.

It didn't take long for the deputies to spot the vehicle and pull it over. They found a loaded gun, a mask and stolen postal keys inside and arrested Christopher Smith, 23, and Junus Hayes, 24.

Both are charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to Precinct 4.

Herman said more charges are expected by the Federal U.S. Postal Inspection Services.

Stolen arrow keys are one reason mail theft has soared in recent years. There were fewer than 60,000 complaints in 2018 but the number soared to more than 250,000 in 2023, according to CBS News.

USPS says it's upgrading mailboxes with electronic locking mechanics but that will take several years and billions of dollars, CBS reported.
