Fire at north Harris County recycling facility extinguished after several hours

Eastex Fire Department Chief Bryan Harris said they had about 13 departments and about 40 trucks assisting in putting out the fire.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A trash fire burned at a recycling plant in northeast Harris County Saturday, according to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office.

It happened around at a facility on East Mount Houston Road between Suburban Road and Sheridan Road. The fire marshal's office said it was extinguished around 7 a.m. on Sunday.

Eastex Fire Department Chief Bryan Harris said they had about 13 departments and about 40 trucks assisting in putting out the fire. Water was being drafted out of a pond nearby.

Harris said three firefighters were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. They have since been released.

Sgt. Oscar Castiblacno with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office said this area is a scrap metal area. The facilities deal with vehicles, scooters and things possessing lithium-ion batteries.

No operation of any kind was underway when the fire broke out, but workers were present on the scene, Castiblanco said.

Executive Assistant Chief Rodney Reed with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office said response teams are on site monitoring the facility. Air monitoring is also being conducted within the community.

Officials said putting the fire out may be a one or two-day operation. The investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
