Hail damages more than half of Hitchcock’s police cars

A thunderstorm dropped large hail in parts of Galveston County early Wednesday, taking out half of Hitchcock’s police cars.

HITCHCOCK, Texas -- A thunderstorm dropped large hail in parts of Galveston County early Wednesday, taking out half of Hitchcock s police cars.

A spokesman for the Hitchcock Police Department said 7 of their 11 patrol cars suffered extensive damage from the hail, which broke glass and dented hoods. Rain water got into some of the vehicles, damaging electronic equipment as well. The hail also damaged several employees' cars that were parked outside the station.

The police department said despite the damaged patrol cars, they still have enough to put on the road, and there would not be a reduction in police service in the community.

The section of the city hit hardest was 2nd Street out to Highway 6. Midway Church of Christ was one of several buildings and homes that had its windows broken.

Some residents told KHOU 11 News that those with roof damage were already trying to cover the damage as the rain came down.

Despite all the damage, KHOU 11 News has not received any reports of injuries.

By 5 a.m. Wednesday most of the rain and storms were moving away from the Houston area.
