HOUSTON — Día de los Muertos, which translates to English as Day of the Dead, is the ultimate fiesta that's all about honoring those who have passed away with a splash of color, a pinch of tradition, and a whole lot of love.

Día de los Muertos is a two-day Mexican holiday that kicks off Nov. 1 through Nov. 2, bringing families together to remember and celebrate their loved ones who have died. It isn't a somber affair, though. Instead, it’s a colorful fiesta.

The history of the celebration is rooted in Aztec and Mexican traditions. Queue the marigolds candles, colorful sugar skulls that represent the departed souls of loved ones, and snacks laid on a decorated altar. This is called an ofrenda or offering. Families create the altars at home and decorate them with photos and trinkets of their loved ones who have passed.
