Brazoria County accepting Christmas trees to build up sand dunes

The county has been hosting "Dunes Day" for 40 years. Each year, volunteers strap down donated trees to collect sand over time. Then the trees decompose into fertilizer to breed new life.

BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas - The Brazoria County Parks Department wants your discarded Christmas trees.

“By donating your Christmas tree, you're allowing us to help keep the barrier island there,” said Mike Mullenweg, Brazoria County Parks Special Events Coordinator.

The county has been hosting "Dunes Day" for 40 years. Each year, volunteers strap down donated trees to collect sand over time. Then the trees decompose into fertilizer to breed new life.

County conservationists are still making repairs to dunes damaged in Hurricane Ike.

“Literally without those dunes that are in constant danger from tropical storms in the Gulf of Mexico, we will not have a beach,” Mullenweg said.
