One of the biggest elephants ever seen in Zimbabwe has been gunned down by a German trophy hunter and now the alleged killer has been named.

The Telegraph said three separate sources have identified him as Rainer Schorr, a real estate CEO. Schorr denies that he's the one who killed the elephant.

The hunter reportedly paid $60,000 to shoot the bull elephant.

It was believed to be between 40 and 60 years old.

The German national, had travelled to Zimbabwe to conduct a 21-day game hunt including species among the Big Five of elephants, leopards, lions, buffalo and rhinoceros, The Telegraph reports.

The elephant kill was celebrated in hunting forums around the world and some suggested he might have been the biggest elephant killed in Africa in decades.

The hunt was legal, but conservationists and photographic safari operators in the area expressed their outrage, saying the animal was one of a kind and should have been protected for all to see.

The photo of the hunter posing proudly next to the majestic creature has stirred up memories of the killing of Cecil the lion, which also caused global outrage.
