Galveston County sees increase in reports of whooping cough cases

"There have been several confirmed cases of whooping cough, with additional suspected cases currently under investigation," the health district said.
Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a very contagious respiratory illness. It may begin like a common cold but the coughing can last for weeks or months.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — The Galveston County Health District on Monday announced an increase in reports of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in the county.

"There have been several confirmed cases of whooping cough, with additional suspected cases currently under investigation," the health district said in a news release. "This increase aligns with trends observed by state health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this year."

GCHD said whooping cough, a bacterial infection, is highly contagious and if not treated can easily spread.

"It usually starts like a common cold but worsens over 1-2 weeks as a cough develops," GCHD said.

Those with whooping cough can have coughing spells where they can't catch their breath in between coughs. In young babies, the health district said they might not cough but rather may have trouble breathing, gag, gasp, turn blue or vomit.

The health district encourages families to make sure their whooping cough vaccinations are up-to-date to prevent the infection from spreading.

"Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against pertussis," GCHD said.

The vaccines for children start at 2 months old, with boosters recommended for children and adults.

If you're concerned about whooping cough, GCHD recommends getting an appointment with your family's healthcare provider.

GCHD said those in need of immunizations can visit them at 9850-B Emmett F Lowry Expressway, Suite B-104 in Texas City. They can be reached by phone at 409-949-3459. They're open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They stay open until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays.
