FBI: Serial killer spent time in Houston before committing suicide

FBI agents are asking for the public’s help in tracking the travels and activities of a serial killer who spent time in Houston in 2012.Israel Keyes committed suicide in his Anchorage, Alaska jail cell after being arrested last year.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska FBI agents are asking for the public s help in tracking the travels and activities of a serial killer who spent time in Houston in 2012.

Israel Keyes committed suicide in his Anchorage, Alaska jail cell after being arrested last year. He was awaiting trial in the February 2012 rape and strangulation murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig of Anchorage.

Keyes is suspected in at least 10 other kidnappings and murders across the country between 2001 and March 2012. Keyes admitted he was a serial killer before he died and gave investigators some details.

He told the FBI that only one other victim s body besides Koenig s was recovered and that case was ruled accidental.

Keyes died before agents could question him thoroughly.

Investigators believe at least one of Keyes victims lived in Texas, or a surrounding state.

This timeline released by the FBI sheds some new light on the mysterious case that left a trail of unsolved killings around the country.

Here s a timeline pieced together by FBI investigators:

1997 or 1998:

Keyes abducted a teenage girl while she and friends were tubing on the Deschutes River, he told investigators. The FBI said Keyes was living in Maupin, Oregon, at the time, and the abduction is believed to have occurred near that area. The identity of the victim is not known, and neither is the location of the murder.

2001

Keyes was discharged from the Army and he moved to Neah Bay, Washington

Between July 2001 and 2005

Keyes killed an unidentified couple in Washington state.

Between 2005 and 2006

Keyes told investigators he committed two separate murders, disposing of at least one of the bodies in Lake Crescent, near Port Angeles, Washington.

2007

Keyes moved to Anchorage but continued to travel extensively.

2011

Keyes murdered Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vermont. He later confessed, but their bodies were never found.

February 2012

After killing Koenig in early February, Keyes flew to New Orleans and went on a two-week cruise. When the cruise ended, he drove to Texas.

Feb. 12 to Feb. 16, 2012

  • Records show Keyes rented a blue 2011 Kia Soul from a Houston rental agency on February 12.
  • Investigators believe Keyes traveled to Dallas, where his family lives, during that time period between February 12 and February16.
  • Keyes is suspected of visiting the Post Oak Cemetery in the Glen Rose, Texas, area between February 12 and 16, 2012.
  • He also admitting traveling through the Texas cities of Azle, Aledo, and Cleburne.
  • When he turned in the rental car on February 18, records showed 2,847 miles were logged in the six-day time period.

March 8, 2012

Keyes withdrew cash from an ATM at the People s State Bank in Shepherd, Texas.

March 10, 2012

Keyes withdrew cash from an ATM at the Humble Community Bank in Humble, Texas.

March 13, 2012

Keyes was arrested in Lufkin after trying to use Koenig s ATM card. Three weeks after the arrest, Koenig s dismembered body was found in a frozen lake north of Anchorage.

December 2012

Keyes committed suicide

When he was arrested, Keyes had the phone numbers of three Houston-area prostitutes. The FBI said Keyes admitted frequenting prostitutes, but it s unknown if Keyes met any of his victims that way.

Keyes said he robbed several banks and broke into homes to fund his travels, according to the FBI. He also worked as a general contractor.

FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez said the goal of releasing the information is to identify victims who remain unknown, and provide some closure to their families.

We ve exhausted all our investigative leads, Gonzalez said.

The FBI said Keyes also traveled internationally, but it s unknown if he killed anyone outside the U.S.

In 2012, Keyes was 34 years old and described as 6 2 tall and 190 pounds.
