HOUSTON — A woman accused of shooting her stepfather in the face and killing him faced a judge on Thursday.
Darneisha Hall, 34, is charged with murder in the death of 66-year-old Jorish Dwight Sherman. He was shot early Tuesday at a senior living apartment complex on Antoine Drive in northwest Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.
"As he opened the door, she presented a firearm and shot him in the face,” Harris County Assistant District Attorney Wesley Stafford said.
According to Hall's attorney, Tucker Graves, she was there looking for a place to stay.
"My understanding is that she came to her stepfather’s apartment seeking shelter, she had been homeless,” Graves said.
According to investigators, Sherman's daughter, who was also inside the apartment, heard them arguing moments before she heard the gunshots.
Police found Hall a short time later at a nearby bus stop.
"After she was identified, they also recovered a 9-millimeter handgun that was consistent with the shell casings that were found on the scene,” Stafford said.
Court records show Hall has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2008.
On Thursday, the judge set Hall’s total bond at $400,000.
"I think it's an appropriately high amount considering her criminal history that she's been previously convicted of a felon in possession of a weapon, and she was found with another weapon,” Stafford said.
Hall's attorney said he'll be requesting a mental health evaluation.
"She's a lady with extreme mental health issues, she's been a patient of MHMRA for a number of years, they're very familiar with her,” Graves explained.
If Hall makes bond, part of her bond conditions include being on 24-hour house arrest and wearing a GPS ankle monitor.
She is due back in court on May 7.
