'It was inhumane what they did' | Suspect wanted after 73-year-old man killed in hit-and-run while crossing street in his wheelchair

The victim's son said his father, Erasmo Perez, was dragged 200 feet after being struck by a dark-colored pickup truck.

PASADENA, Texas — Pasadena police are still looking for the person responsible for a hit-and-run crash that killed a man as he tried crossing the street in his wheelchair.

The crash happened Aug. 8 shortly before 6:09 a.m. at 100 Southmore Avenue, just east of the Shaver Street Intersection.

Erasmo Perez's son, David Perez, said it's an unimaginable pain realizing the pain his father suffered.

Erasmo traveled this crosswalk daily in his wheelchair, but in an instant, an unknown driver slammed into him.

"And I feel it was inhumane what they did. Because I didn’t see no tire marks stopping," David said,

Erasmo's four sons and grandchildren are now left to carry on his legacy of respect and kindness. David said in the end, his father didn't receive that same courtesy, instead, someone took his life in what seems to be no regard.

"He’s a well-respected man around there. Everybody knew him rolling in that wheelchair. That’s his way of going places.

A stroke left his father partially paralyzed and a younger son cared for him. For eight years, he'd travel in his wheelchair to a McDonald's inside a Wal-Mart near the corner of Southmore Avenue and Shaver Street.

The highlight of his day is that he'd always order the same thing.

"They covered his table with a cloth and put his biscuit, sausage and coffee, right there with a tray and his picture," David said.

Police said during this incident, a dark-colored pickup truck struck Erasmo and left the scene driving eastbound on Southmore Avenue.

Erasmo was transported by ambulance and later died at the hospital

So until there are more answers, the family is left with just hope and sadness.

"But also anger at the pain. My dad felt the torture of getting drug 200 feet," David said.

A GoFundMe has been created to support the family.
