Man accused in deadly shooting on Beechnut Street was out on bond for road rage incident, HPD says

Carlos Chavez was out on bond for another road rage incident when investigators said he was involved in a deadly shooting on Beechnut Street.

HOUSTON — A 28-year-old man is facing serious charges after investigators said he shot and killed a man and wounded another earlier this month.

Carlos Chavez, 28, is charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The shooting happened on Nov. 7 on Beechnut Street near Beltway 8.

Houston police officials said officers responded to a shooting call in a bank parking lot. They said they found two 23-year-old men who had been shot. Jadrian Edwards was in the driver's seat and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim, who was in the front seat, was taken to an area hospital. Authorities said a woman and Edwards' child were in the car and weren't seriously injured.

Detectives said the shooting didn't actually happen in the parking lot. Instead, it happened down Beechnut and a dozen shell casings were found in the road. In interviews with detectives, the people who survived the shooting said they had no idea why Chavez opened fire on their car. They said Edwards was going to get photos taken with his daughter when he was gunned down.

After reviewing surveillance video, investigators said they saw the victim's car and a small SUV traveling next to each other when someone in the SUV pulled out a gun and opened fire into the car.

Investigators said they identified Chavez as the owner of the SUV and charged him on Thursday, Nov. 21. He was arrested a day later and booked into the Harris County Jail.

According to court records, Chavez was out on bond for a separate road rage case. He was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the most recent shooting and investigators said they were able to confirm his location based on those records.

Chavez is being held without bond. He's due back in court on Tuesday.
