Rideshare driver hit, killed by his own car when truck smashed into it while he was working on it, HPD says

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the backseat was unharmed.

HOUSTON — A rideshare driver is dead after a crash on the East Freeway early Sunday morning, Houston police say.

This happened before 4 a.m. on the East Freeway near Kress.

The Houston Police Department said the driver had stopped after he believed he ran over something and damaged his car. He believed he had pulled over to the shoulder, but was actually still in one of the main lanes, according to HPD.  While he was inspecting the car, another vehicle slammed into the back of it, pushing it on top of the rideshare driver.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the backseat was unharmed.

HPD said the other car did not stay at the scene. They said the other car may have been a dark-colored truck.
