HPD: 1 dead after shooting, SWAT standoff near Texas Medical Center

HPD said a man shot himself at an apartment on North Stadium Drive, which is near where Old Spanish Trail turns into South Main Street.

HOUSTON — The Houston Police Department said a man killed himself after firing at officers at an apartment complex on Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, the incident began just after 1 p.m. when family members called police for a welfare check on a loved one at an apartment complex along North Stadium Drive, between the Texas Medical Center and NRG Stadium near where Old Spanish Trail turns into South Main Street.

The family members, who were out of town, said he had made concerning comments about his well-being.

HPD investigators said responding officers got to the apartment around 1:40 p.m. but no one answered the door.

Around 2:15 p.m., Houston firefighters got to the scene and were able to force their way inside the unit. Once the door was forced open, officers announced themselves and asked if everyone was OK, authorities said.

That's when, according to investigators, someone opened fire from inside the unit. They said several shots were fired but they're not sure if they were directed at the officers.

Authorities said the officers didn't return fire, but instead, backed out and took cover while continuing to try to communicate with the man who was inside.

As they were getting ready to leave, investigators said, the officers heard another shot being fired from inside the unit.

SWAT showed up around 4 p.m. and used technology to check the inside of the unit. That's when they found a man who was dead -- apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

They said the man is believed to be in his mid-50s.
