Bodycam video shows moment home invasion suspect shot HPD officer in Spring Branch

The suspects zip-tied a mother in front of her two small children and were ransacking the home when Houston police busted into the home on Alderney.

HOUSTON — Newly released bodycam videos show the tense moments when Houston police officers busted in on an active home invasion and one of them was shot.

Three men have been arrested and charged with felonies in connection with the incident.

It unfolded on the morning of Sept. 17 at a house on Alderney Drive in a Spring Branch neighborhood behind the IKEA along I-10.

Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said the whole thing started that Tuesday morning when two men knocked on the front door of the home. At the time of the incident, homeowner Ben Bates said his daughter saw the men holding a DoorDash bag and thought they were at the wrong house so she answered the door to let them know.

"As soon as she opened the door, he pulled a gun out of a DoorDash bag and he forced entry," Bates said.

He said the robbers tied his daughter up in front of her two small children.

"They zip-tied my daughter and she had her 1-year-old and 3-year-old ... they proceeded to ransack the house," Bates said. "They didn't do anything with the kids but they did have her walking them through the rooms trying to find stuff to take."

According to investigators, a concerned neighbor saw what was happening and called 911. Diaz said the responding officers were at the scene within four minutes.

When officers got there, they confronted two suspects inside the home and also saw the woman who was bound with zip ties. Authorities said that while the officers were detaining 38-year-old Michael Perez, Raymond Perez appeared from a back room and opened fire.

HPD Officer S. Durfee was shot in the leg but was still able to return fire. He survived the shooting.

Raymond Perez, 35, wasn't hit and ran out the back door. He was found about a block away and was taken into custody.

Investigators said the getaway driver, 18-year-old Brian A. Garcia Chavez, left the scene but was found several hours later and was taken into custody by SWAT.

Since an officer discharged his weapon, per department policy, HPD released the bodycam videos from the incident. Watch the video by clicking here or watching below.

Raymond Perez is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Michael Perez and Garcia Chavez are charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, according to HPD.
