HPD officer injured in shooting at SW Houston apartments

A Houston police officer was injured in a shooting at an apartment complex on Forum Park Drive.

HOUSTON — A Houston police officer was injured Thursday in a shooting on the southwest side.

The Houston Police Department tweeted about the shooting just before 2 p.m.

They said an officer was injured in a shooting at an apartment complex on Forum Park Drive, which is near Beltway 8 and the Southwest Freeway.

Officials said officers responded to the apartment complex after getting an anonymous call around 12:45 p.m. about a suspicious person with a weapon. The caller referenced a specific apartment unit.

When officers got there, they weren't sure if the caller or the suspicious person were in the specific apartment unit that was referenced on the call because no one met them when they arrived.

The officers looked around, and while they were doing so, got another call about a person firing a gun.

They went to the unit that was referenced in the call, and as they approached the door, a large dog started barking at them. That's when authorities said the suspect opened the apartment door with a gun and fired one shot.

The officers returned fire and gave the suspect commands to come out and surrender, which he did and was taken into custody. He was uninjured.

The officer was grazed in the arm and shrapnel was pulled out of the wound at the scene, officials said. The 15-year HPD veteran was seriously shaken up from the incident. He will be placed on administrative duty and his bodycam video will be released in the next 30 days, per HPD policy.

Authorities said they had been called to the apartment unit at least three times previously, including at least one call for a mental illness issue.

A gun was recovered at the scene but officials said they still don't know why the suspect started shooting in the first place. No other injuries were reported.
