Woman fights back when armed robbers ambush her at apartments near NRG, HPD says

“Like, my first thought was, 'This is a sick joke, this could never happen to me,'" Meghan told us. “I think they thought I was an easy target." They were wrong.

HOUSTON — A Houston woman confronted by two gunmen outside her apartment wasn't going to give up without a fight.

Video released by the Houston Police Department Robbery Division shows the guys ambush the victim as she unlocks her door.

"Hey, give me the key," one robber says as he points a gun at her.

But the grad student named Meghan wasn't having it.

"No, no, no! Stop! No!" she shouts while trying to hit and kick the gunman.

“Like, my first thought was, 'This is a sick joke, this could never happen to me.' But like it does, and it did, and it was horrible” Meghan told us on Thursday. “I think they thought I was an easy target."

Boy, were they wrong.

Police say the guys grabbed her wallet and car keys and ran toward the parking lot at the complex in the 8100 block of Fannin Street, near NRG Park.

She chased them and knocked one guy over when she threw her Stanley water bottle at him.

“I hit him smack in the middle of the back and knocked him down," she said.

A third suspect showed up and stood between her and his partners in crime. The victim yelled that she was calling the police and that they couldn't take her "newish" car. The three men then took off running toward Knight Road and left the car behind.

Meghan realizes it could have been a lot worse.

“My door was unlocked and they could’ve pushed me in my apartment and done God knows what," she told us. “I wouldn’t wish that experience on my worst enemy."

The whole thing happened around 6:45 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 22. HPD is still trying to identify the robbers and they're hoping someone will recognize them.

Meghan is in the medical field so she had moved to the complex to be near the Texas Medical Center. But she was so shaken up by the robbery, that she has since moved out.

Police generally advise victims not to fight back, especially if the crooks are armed.
