Gun goes off during struggle between off-duty Harris County deputy, suspected tire thief, HPD says

The shooting happened when the deputy confronted the suspected thief and a struggled ensued.

HOUSTON — An investigation is underway after shots were fired during a burglary at an apartment complex in southwest Houston Monday morning.

Houston police said an off-duty deputy confronted a thief trying to steal tires from a car near his vehicle.

This happened just before 5 a.m. at a complex off Westpark Drive.

Police said the deputy was alerted by a notification of a car alarm going off outside of his complex. He grabbed his gun and a flashlight to investigate what was going on.

That is when the deputy spotted a man in his 20s stealing tires off a car near his truck and loading them into a white Mercedes crossover, police said.

Police said when the deputy confronted the suspected thief there was some sort of struggle between the two. During the struggle, the deputy’s gun went off, but the suspected thief got away.

It appears no one was hit by the gunfire.

The Houston Police Department Special Investigations Unit is investigating, as well as the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Their Internal Affairs Division is doing the administrative side, which is standard with all officer-involved shootings.
