HPD: Officers shoot man who shot at them while responding to burglary call at west Houston apartments

Houston police said they were dispatched to the Flats on Tanglewilde around 3:30 p.m. after a woman saw three masked people entering her unit on a doorbell camera.

HOUSTON — A man was shot by Houston Police Department officers on Wednesday in west Houston.

It happened when officers responded to a burglary call at the Flats on Tanglewilde apartments on Tanglewilde Street just north of Westheimer Road near Gessner Road.

Police said they were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after a woman called police to say she saw three masked people entering her unit on a doorbell camera. She also called a family member.

The two officers who arrived at the scene were unaware a family member was also called, according to police.

Officials said the family member raised his firearm and shot at officers and officers returned fire, hitting the man in the leg. The officers weren't hit.

The officers later approached the family member and applied a tourniquet to help stop the bleeding. He was transported to an area hospital and was expected to survive.

His motive for shooting officers is unknown at this time, according to police.

Police said some of the bullets struck other apartments, but no one else was injured.

People who live in the apartment complex told KHOU 11 News reporter Katiera Winfrey they saw emergency personnel take one person out of the apartment in a stretcher from the second-floor elevator.

They said it was a frightening scene because they weren't used to seeing that type of police presence in their building.

“I just came home from work I came in and I’m walking into my apartment and there’s a flood of police officers and then we just heard like four or five really loud gunshots in the hallway," resident Haven Pleasant said.

The masked men who broke into the apartment got away. Police did not say if anything was stolen.

Per HPD policy, the officers were placed on administrative leave and bodycam footage will released within 30 days.
