Houston police asking for help in solving 2023 murder

David Garcia was shot dead on New Year's Day in 2023, and police are still trying to find the person responsible.

HOUSTON — The Houston Police Department and Crime Stoppers of Houston held a press conference Wednesday asking for the public's help in finding the person responsible for shooting a man dead on New Year's Day in 2023.

HPD Homicide Detective Bart Nabors said the victim, David Garcia, had gone with his family and friends to Two Wheels Down, 6225 Greens Road, on the early morning of New Year's Day to celebrate the holiday. But they weren't let in as there was a private party going on.

As they were escorted away, Nabors said a physical altercation took place in a ditch next to the street. Afterwards, Garcia and his family continued walking to their car when someone pulled out a gun and shot Garcia in the back. He died from the injury in the hospital days later.

Garcia was involved in a verbal altercation with a group of people, and was shot in the back while walking to his vehicle, Nabors said. Garcia died from the injury.

Police are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for any tips that lead to the arrest of a suspect in this case.

"We know somebody out there knows who killed David Garcia," Nabors said. "We're giving you up to 5,000 good reasons to step up to the plate and do the right thing."

Nabors also had a message for the suspect or suspects who killed Garcia.

"We're gonna find you," Nabors said. "Make no doubts about it. It's just a matter of time. We're coming after you. And the whole world is now gonna know we're looking for you. And when we do find you, we're gonna make sure that you don't breath free air for a long, long time."

Garcia's sister-in-law, Judy Martinez, also spoke, and said the killing shouldn't have happened and that it was cowardly.

"It was the worst thing that one person can ever go through," Martinez said. "I don't wish this upon anybody."

Martinez said the death is affecting her, her husband, her sons, and Garcia's mother.

"We miss him deeply," she said. "I can't go a day without thinking about him."

Investigators will give the latest information in the case and family members will also be in attendance.

We will stream the news conference live on KHOU.com and our mobile app at 10 a.m.
