Deputy released from hospital after being shot by teen who was breaking into cars in NE Harris County, sheriff says

The HCSO deputy returned fire, shooting the alleged teenage burglar several times. The teen is expected to survive.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A Harris County sheriff's deputy was released from the hospital Saturday after being shot by a teenage burglar in northeast Harris County, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The alleged teenage burglar, who the sheriff said was 16 years old, was shot multiple times after the deputy returned fire. He was taken to a hospital where he is expected to survive. The sheriff said he has been charged with aggravated assault on a public servant and burglary of a motor vehicle.

What happened

The shooting happened shortly before 2 a.m. on Cactus Bend Drive near the Woodland Pines community off Atascocita Road.

Gonzalez said his office received multiple reports of teens breaking into vehicles and when the deputy went to investigate, he found three people in the area who were believed to be in their mid to late teens. The deputy was getting out of his patrol car when two of them took off and the third pulled out a gun and shot the deputy, according to Gonzalez.

The sheriff said the deputy was hit in the arm but managed to return fire, hitting the teen multiple times. The deputy held the teen at gunpoint until backup arrived.

Both the teen and deputy were taken to nearby hospitals for their injuries.

As of Saturday afternoon, deputies were still searching for the other two suspects.

The injured deputy has been with HCSO for six years -- three as a corrections officer and three as a law enforcement officer.
