Woman with machete shot by Galveston police after stabbing at women's shelter, GPD says

Police said officers later found that there was a stabbing victim inside of the shelter.

GALVESTON, Texas — A woman armed with a machete was shot by police after they said she attacked two people inside a women’s shelter in Galveston Wednesday morning, according to police.

This happened around 9 a.m. near the Resource and Crisis Center shelter.

The Galveston Police Department said 911 callers reported that a woman cut another person with a machete inside an office at the shelter and tried to set a sofa on fire. Police later found that there were two stabbing victims inside of the shelter.

Police said the woman began to chase people out of the center towards the nearby intersection.

When an officer arrived at the scene, he reported that the woman was banging on his patrol unit window with the machete, police said.

At some point, an officer opened fire on the armed woman from inside their vehicle.

Police said the suspect and one stabbing victim were taken to the hospital. Another person who was stabbed was treated at the scene.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
