Father charged with capital murder in death of his infant twins has bond set at $3 million

Fernando Vega made a court appearance on Wednesday. He's facing two capital murder charges and two counts of injury to a child.

HOUSTON — A man accused of killing his 1-month-old twins about a year ago made a court appearance on Wednesday.

A judge set bond at $3 million for Fernando Vega, who's charged with two counts of capital murder and two counts of injury to a child.

On Oct. 4, 2023, Massail and Mirena Vega were found unresponsive at a home on Linden Creek Lane in the Pasadena area. The twins were pronounced dead at the scene just before noon.

Vega told investigators that he was the last person to see the children alive around 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. He claimed he left them in his grandmother's care.

Authorities later said the infants died from injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma, including broken bones and head injuries. The twins were also severely malnourished and dehydrated, according to an autopsy.

In April 2024, Vega was initially charged with injury to a child but capital murder charges were added later. His attorney said he plans to fight the case.

The mother of the twins, Angelina Calderon, is also charged with two counts of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.

'I don't care if you're blood'

The short lives of Massail and Mirena Vega were filled with unimaginable trauma that the 6-week-olds could not verbalize, according to authorities.

"There should have been something done," Sarah Calderon said in April after the autopsy results were revealed.

She is Angelina Calderon's aunt. Sarah Calderon said her niece deserves what's coming to her if the allegations are proven true.

"I don't care if you're blood or whatever," Sarah Calderon said. "Like, those babies didn't deserve to go through what they went through."

During court on April 22, Angelina Calderon had a loud, emotional outburst as she tried to explain that Vega was the last one with the children.

"I don't care! You're making me look like I'm a bad person," she said in court. "I don't f*****g care. I was at work when they f*****g died."

Sarah Calderon said the family is split over whether to support her.

"At the end of the day, you're the mother and father," she said. "Y'all are the ones responsible for the babies' well-being."
