Mother, 10-year-old daughter shot by man in apparent murder-suicide, authorities say

According to officials, a mother and her 10-year-old daughter were shot by a man who then turned the gun on himself at an apartment complex in the Spring area.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A mother and her 10-year-old daughter were shot Thursday in an apparent murder-suicide at an apartment complex in the Spring area, according to authorities.

Officials said they were shot by a 39-year-old man who then turned the gun on himself. Authorities said the man had been in a dating relationship with the 33-year-old woman and they lived together at the apartment.

It happened around 5 p.m. at a complex on Springwood Village Parkway near where the Hardy Toll Road meets the North Freeway in far north Harris County.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Harris County Precinct 4 deputies responded to the incident and found the man and woman unresponsive at the scene. They were both pronounced dead.

Investigators said they believe the man and woman had an altercation before the shooting.

"There was some type of fight between the male and the female and the male pulled out a weapon and started shooting," an investigator said.

The child was shot in the abdomen and taken to a hospital via Life Flight. She was in critical condition and immediately went into surgery. An update on her condition wasn't provided when investigators gave an update at the scene later in the night.

Authorities said they weren't sure if the child was shot on purpose or if she just got caught in the crossfire. They also said they were going to look into if there had been previous calls for service to the apartment.

No one else was injured in the incident.
