CHANNELVIEW, Texas — A driver faces a felony murder charge after being involved in a two-vehicle crash that left another driver dead in the Sheldon area Monday night, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
The sheriff said deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash on Sheldon Road near the Crosby Freeway.
A Ford F-150 driven by Joaquin Compean-Juarez, 49, was heading west on the Crosby Freeway, the sheriff said. At the same time, a Ford Fiesta driven by Sebastian Benitez-Mendoza was heading north on Sheldon Road when he approached the intersection with the Crosby Freeway.
The sheriff said Compean-Juarez failed to drive in a single lane, traveled down the grass embankment for the overpass and onto the northbound lanes of Sheldon Road. He then hit the Ford Fiesta.
Benitez-Mendoza, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle, the sheriff said. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The sheriff said Compean-Juarez showed signs of intoxication and has two prior convictions for driving while intoxicated.
He has been charged with felony murder.
The sheriff said the crash remains under investigation.
