MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — A Montgomery County grand jury handed down an indictment against the man accused of stabbing a pediatrician to death last year.
Miles Joseph Fridrich, 24, is charged with murder and is scheduled to be back in court on Jan. 29 at 9 a.m.

Dr. Talat Jehan Khan was stabbed to death on Oct. 28 while she was sitting at a picnic table in the common area of her Conroe apartment complex. Khan's family members said she went out there because she wanted a moment of peace.
Fridrich is accused of stabbing her multiple times. Witnesses said he came out of nowhere. After he tried to run away, Conroe police were able to arrest Fridrich near the crime scene.
Nearly three months after the deadly stabbing, police said they still don't know why he did it. Khan's family members said they're unaware of any sort of connection between her and her accused killer.
Fridrich remains detained at the Montgomery County Jail, where he's been since the day of the alleged crime. He's being held on a $500,000 bond.
Who was Khan?
Khan, a pediatrician who moved from Seattle to the Houston area in 2023, was loved by her family members as well as her hundreds of patients.
"This is an immeasurable loss for our family, completely unexpected," said Mahnoor Mangrio, Khan's niece. "She’s a Muslim, strong in her faith, those are identifiable traits about her. She’s extremely loving, kind. She was my aunt ... the best aunt."
Khan's oldest brother, Wajahat Nyaz, said his sister loved her two children, but there was one thing she wanted.
"She wanted to go somewhere it was sunny. She moved out here and she liked it, liked the sun and the warm weather," Nyaz said. "A murder like this shouldn't go unpunished. It's bad for the community. It's bad for the entire country, so we want your support to get justice for her."
Neighbors shaken up
Khan's neighbors were left with more questions than answers.
"It was such a senseless, senseless murder," one resident said.
"We are all still going to keep our head up high and have her in our hearts," another said.
Muslim community reaction
The Muslim community sent its condolences to Khan's family.
"May Allah make ease for her and provide strength to her family to bear this loss," the Al-Ansaar Islamic Center wrote in a Facebook post.
They said Khan started coming to their masjid when she moved.
CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, passed its condolences onto the family. The Houston chapter said it's in contact with law enforcement, although a motive for the stabbing remains unclear.
"We are unsure at this moment if this was a hate crime, however, given the tragic circumstances, we are paying very close attention to the investigation," CAIR Houston said.
