Child shot while walking in park with family in northeast Houston, HPD says

The boy's condition is unknown, but police said he was alert and talking.

HOUSTON — Houston police said a 3-year-old boy was shot while walking in the park with his family on New Year's Day.

This happened at Shady Lane Park, which is near the intersection of Parker Road and the Eastex Freeway.

The Houston Police Department said while the family was taking a stroll through the park, they heard gunshots in the distance and then noticed their 3-year-old was shot in the leg.

As the family was driving to the hospital, they spotted an HPD officer. The officer put a tourniquet on the 3-year-old before he was taken to a hospital by Houston firefighters. His condition is unknown, but police said he was alert and talking.

No other details were given.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story said Shady Lane Park was in west Houston near the Beltway and Westheimer, but that information has been corrected.
