Man in vehicle shot on Southwest Freeway during rush hour, HPD says

Houston police say multiple shots were fired and the passenger was struck twice.

HOUSTON — Emergency responders rushed to the scene of a shooting on the Southwest Freeway Friday morning.

A passenger in a vehicle was shot during the morning rush hour, according to the Houston Police Department.

It happened in the inbound lanes of US 59 near 610 West Loop  around 8:40 a.m.

The victim was shot twice and rushed to a hospital by ambulance in unknown condition.

"Right in the chest, right in the middle, and on the right side of the body of his body," HPD Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu said. "So, we're not sure how that occurred, seeing that the gunshots are on the windshield. So, once again, that's going to be pending the investigation."

Several shots were fired through the front windshield. Cantu said a shotgun was recovered on the grass near the feeder road below where the shooting happened.

"We're not sure right now at this moment if the shot came from inside or outside the vehicle," she said.

Investigators don't believe it was a road rage shooting.

The driver wasn't hurt and he was being questioned at last check. He was unable to provide a description of the shooter or their vehicle, according to Cantu.

HPD is asking anyone who witnessed the shooting to give them a call.
