Here’s how to vet a contractor following storm damage

Finding and vetting a contractor isn’t always easy, but the Federal Trade Commission has some tips.

HOUSTON — As homeowners assess damage from the severe storm that swept across the Houston area on Thursday, remember to carefully vet contractors before hiring them.

Finding and vetting a contractor isn’t always easy, but here’s what the Federal Trade Commission recommends.

  • Consider only contractors who are insured.
  • Ask for proof of insurance.
  • And depending on what you need, only some specialized contractors, like electricians and A/C repair need a license in Texas.
  • Their licenses can be checked at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation’s website.
  • Get a written contract.

The FTC recommends the contract includes:

  • The contractor’s name, address, phone, and license number (if required)
  • An estimated start and completion date
  • A payment schedule
  • Any promises made during conversations or calls related to issues such as the scope of work and the cost of labor and materials
  • A written statement of your right to cancel the contract within three business days if you signed it in your home or at a location other than the seller’s permanent place of business
  • No blank spaces that someone could fill in later
  • Don’t pay in cash. It’s harder to track. The FTC recommends paying by credit card or check.
  • Don’t pay in full until the work is completed. And get a receipt.
