Single mom who rescued man from his crushed truck during derecho storm being rewarded with new home

During the May derecho in Houston, Veronica Marin didn't hesitate to help a Tomball man after a massive tree crashed onto his SUV.

TOMBALL, Texas — We first introduced you to Veronica Marin in August when a Tomball man contacted us with their amazing story.

Bryan Pederson said Marin rescued him when a massive tree crushed his SUV during the May 16 derecho

The single mom and her three kids were a few cars behind him on Hufsmith Road near FM 2978. When Marin saw what happened, she didn't hesitate to stop and help.

“She reached in, undid my seatbelt, which I didn’t even think about, and grabbed me like she had done this a million times,” Pederson said. “When you see the pictures, it’s unbelievable."

Just as fast as she appeared, Veronica was gone, rushing to get her kids home.

Thanks in part to Facebook, Pederson tracked her down.

“I was emotional and kept playing through my head, how do you thank someone who literally saved your life?” Pederson said.

When he learned that Marin's home was severely damaged by the storm, Pederson started a GoFundMe to help pay for repairs. We shared their story and big-hearted Houstonians donated over $60,000.

“God is good all the time," Marin said. "I do this for Mr. Bryan without expecting anything in return. I am very grateful to God because he put me in that moment with him."

But that was just the beginning for Marin.

Braustin Homes, a San Antonio-based mobile home retailer, heard the story and wanted to reward Marin for her heroism.

Instead of using the GoFundMe funds to repair her damaged home, it will go toward a brand new 2025 home provided by Braustin Homes at cost. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, new appliances and central heating and air. Any money left over will go directly to Marin.

"Veronica Marin is like many of the families we’ve served, a hard-working parent who wants to make a good life for her family," Braustin Homes co-founder Jason Piña said, " We are lucky that Bryan put his faith in us and allowed the Braustin team to be a part of this incredible journey for Veronica.”

"I have been overwhelmed with gratitude throughout this entire process and am thankful to Braustin for getting Veronica and her family set up with a new home with a warranty, so she can focus on spending time with her kids,” Pederson said.

KHOU 11 will be on hand Friday when Marin and her children receive their new home.
