HOUSTON — With bitter cold in Southeast Texas' forecast, the Houston Humane Society wants to make sure your pets stay warm and safe as the temperatures drop.

On Saturday, January 13, HHS will host an emergency pet supplies drive-thru giveaway from noon to 2 p.m. The shelter will give away blankets, pet clothing, pet food, and dog houses at the Houston Humane Society Pavillion, located at 3330 South Sam Houston Parkway. HHS provided the following tips for keeping your pets safe during frigid weather:

  • Keep pets indoors and don't leave pets outside unattended during freezing weather. You also should NOT leave your pet unattended in a vehicle during extreme weather.
  • Keep your pets dry. When coming inside, HHS says to make sure your pets' paws and fur are nice and dry.
  • Designate a safe space inside. With the cold weather, HHS recommends being prepared with potty pads for pets who struggle going outside during severe weather.
  • Pet sweaters can help short-haired dogs stay warm outside.
  • Beware of car hazards by tapping the hood of your vehicle. This will help protect any stray cats and animals who may have taken refuge under the car.
  • Strays will be looking for safe spaces during the extreme temperatures. HHS said leaving extra blankets or towels out can help them stay warm.
