HOUSTON — If you're trying to come up with a Halloween costume, a big garage sale in Houston this weekend will feature some fun and unique options.
For the first time since 2016, Houston Grand Opera is holding a garage sale at its warehouse. They'll have "high-quality" costumes for women and men, including a variety of masks, hats, headdresses, wigs and shoes.
The artisan-made costumes are from HGO productions such as "Carmen," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Aida" at discounted prices.
“There are some items in here that are truly custom, one-of-a-kind, gorgeous, well-crafted pieces,” HGO Costume Coordinator Kaleb Abide said. “They would cost thousands of dollars to reproduce in materials and labor.”
The rows of racks contain clothing in every size, every style and from every period. They even have a cherry-red Elvis jumpsuit.
“I think armor is going to go fast -- single-piece coats and jackets too, stuff that you can add to other costumes. I would love to see these dresses all go," Abide said. "There’s all kinds of stuff here, whether you’re attending Dickens on The Strand, or you’re looking to costume a play, or a dance piece. There’s something for everybody.”
There will also be plenty of interesting -- and in some cases, creepy -- props, including caskets and animal skulls. They also have furniture, including antiques.
Prices range from $1 to $200 but HGO says most items fall in the $50 range, according to HGO.
Teachers and arts organizations will get a 20% discount with ID.
The sale is open to everyone.
