Revisit Prince's iconic first 'Purple Rain' performance

Prince is gone, and everything is terrible.

Prince is gone, and everything is terrible.

There's really only one thing to do at this point, and that's to read, watch and listen to everything we can access from the legendary star. (We recommend renting Purple Rain, revisiting Touré's remarkable book I Would Die 4 U that illustrates the artist's life and career, and re-upping that TIDAL subscription — that's the only streaming service with complete access to Prince's entire catalog.)

But first, revisit this clip, which shows the origins of the Purple Rain you know and love. Prince debuted a new, longer version of the song in 1983 at a benefit concert for the Minneapolis club he immortalized, First Avenue. This version of the song would make its way onto his iconic 1984 album of the same name, and would become one of the best songs of the 1980s — no, of all time.
