Safety tips when choosing rides home from Houston rodeo

Rodeo officials have a designated area for rideshare drop-offs and pickups but in the Yellow Lot, it's not just rideshares and taxis hoping to get your business.

HOUSTON — Authorities issued a warning for those who use rideshares to get home from RodeoHouston -- make sure you pay close attention to the person who's picking you up.

Rodeo officials have a designated area for rideshare drop-offs and pick-ups in the Yellow Lot.

But, it's not just rideshares and taxis that are hoping to get your business.

When leaving the rodeo, folks are being met by drivers offering rides.

"You should share your location," Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen said.

He's seen it himself.

"I encountered about three different drivers with their phones out blinking at me with a commercial company and saying, do you need a ride, do you need a ride," Rosen said.

While the drivers aren't doing anything illegal, Rosen advised people to be safe.

"They're not checked out by a background criminal background check. You don't know what their history is. It's just like you walking down the street and a car stopping and you just going to get in the car with somebody," Rosen said.

It's not just happening at the rodeo, it's happening at sporting events and concerts, too. Rosen said people should keep a checklist in mind before getting into a vehicle they didn't order.

"Check the vehicle, make sure that it's the license plate of the vehicle that that came from the app. Make sure you identify the driver, share it with a loved one," he said.

Uber has some safety tips:

  • Riders should only take trips booked through the platform
  • Drivers should always double-check important details before starting a trip
  • Use the PIN verification
  • Share your location with a loved one
