Heavy rain sent people running for cover at Houston Rodeo; carnival reopens after storm passes

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has plans in place in case the weather takes a turn for the worse.

HOUSTON — Tens of thousands of people headed to RodeoHouston for Friday night's sold-out concert by the Jonas Brothers.

The heavy rain forced everyone to run for cover late this afternoon and the Carnival was shut down for a while because of the storms. It reopened once the storm cleared and the Rodeo started on time at 6:45 p.m.

The wind even blew the rain inside NRG Arena.

With the threat of severe weather, we checked with the folks at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo earlier today and they assured us they have a plan in place to protect the safety of guests, volunteers and staff.

"Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and NRG Park staff use an extensive weather reporting service to ensure we are prepared. Security and emergency personnel constantly monitor weather conditions," HLSR said in a statement. "In the event of severe weather, Rodeo officials will determine which, if any, safety measures are needed. These measures may include but are not limited to, closing any temporary venues such as tented structures, carnival and/or other outdoor venues, or complete grounds evacuation."

The rodeo said it has a command center that alerts everyone when severe weather is imminent. They can do it in a few different ways:

  • Text
  • On screens across the park
  • Microphone/loudspeaker system

If there's lightning or hail, Rodeo officials advise everyone to find safe shelter inside NRG Center, NRG Arena or NRG Stadium, whichever is most accessible.

Those who are already indoors when the weather hits should remain inside until cleared by security and safety personnel.
