'The culture, the fun, the beads, all of it' | Thousands gather to celebrate final weekend of Mardi Gras! Galveston

The Strand is lined with many people enjoying the food, fun and parades in the 113th year of Mardi Gras.

GALVESTON, Texas — The final weekend of Mardi Gras! Galveston attracted thousands of people to the Island. A mix of first-time partygoers and people who traditionally attend the celebrations lined the Strand for parades and live music.

“You can never be over-beaded or over dressed,” said Heather Motschman. She's from Houston and was attending the event for the first time with friends.

“The atmosphere here is very family friendly, everybody is nice, everyone is having a good time, they pay attention to what first responders say, it makes it a great environment to be in,” she said.

With thousands of people expected, over three million beads were prepared for the two weeks worth of festivities in Galveston.

“The culture, the fun, the beads, all of it,” said Amanda Lopez, who was also enjoying the event for the first time.

The biggest Mardi Gras parades are led by three different Krewes, including the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius, Krewe of Gambrinus and the Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade.

The Grand Night Parade has several floats and marching bands from all over the state as part of the entertainment.

Mardi Gras! Galveston is considered the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, dating back to celebrations in 1867.

Over 20 parades were scheduled between Feb. 2 and Feb. 13.
