HOUSTON — Law enforcement officials are mourning the loss of one of their own.
An off-duty Harris County deputy died after being involved in a crash near Richmond and Travis late Saturday night. It's a wreck the Houston Police Department is investigating.
The deputy was brought to Ben Taub Hospital around 10:30 p.m. in critical condition. Despite life-saving measures, he died.
At this point, it's not clear what caused the crash or if any other people were involved.
As news of his death spread, fellow law enforcement came together leading a salute and procession.
"He was a great man and loved by many," Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a news conference overnight.
Gonzalez identified the man as Deputy Ronald Bates, who was with the sheriff's office for more than 30 years.
"We're united as a family to try to surround his immediate family with a lot of love and support as best we can," Gonzalez said from the hospital overnight.
As we learn more about this accident and Deputy Bates, we'll post it here.
