More than 82,000 people applied for Harris County's program which gives $500 a month, but only 2% will be chosen

When the program launched, organizers said only 1,900 applicants from eligible ZIP codes would be accepted.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — At the beginning of the year, Harris County launched a program to provide low-income families a monthly cash payment of $500 for 18 months.

Only 1,900 families from the eligible ZIP codes would be selected.

On Tuesday, we learned more than 82,000 people applied, which means only 2% of those people will be selected for the Uplift Harris program.

How will recipients be selected?

About 70% of the people who will get the money will be randomly chosen from the Uplift Harris applications but the rest will be selected from another program.

"Around 30% of those individuals will be participating or coming from our Access Harris County program," Robinson said.

A big reminder from Harris County leaders is that the program is not operating on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Where does the money come from?

Uplift Harris is funded with $20.5 million from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which was passed to help struggling Americans recover after the pandemic caused an economic crisis.
