'I realized I was getting robbed' | Man has warning after being held at gunpoint by group of teens in SW Houston

The victim said he was told the armed robbers were all between 13 and 15.

HOUSTON — A long-time Meyerland resident has a warning after he said he was robbed at gunpoint by a group of teenagers last week.

Woody Speer has lived in the area for almost 30 years and said nothing like it had ever happened until last Thursday at about 8:30 p.m. during his evening walk.

Speer said he was only a few blocks from his home when he noticed a group of teens out of the corner of his eye on South Rice Avenue near Grape and Jackwood streets. He continued walking. Moments later, he was hit with an object on the side of his head.

“I remember I reached out to grab one of the kids by the arm and the first thing he did was pull away,” Speer said. “And as he pulled away, I looked up and saw the gun. By about that time, another kid raced up, then stuck a gun in my face, and I said, ‘Hey what is it?’ and I realized I was getting robbed.”

Speer said the teens told him to empty his pockets and turn over his cellphone. He said he only had his phone with him, which they made him unlock by forcing him to give them his passcode at gunpoint. When he did that they took it, then ran off. Speer was able to make it home and call 911 a short time later.

Deputies showed up with K-9s and caught the four boys soon after they arrived. Speer said the deputies told him they were between the ages of 13 and 15 years old.

“They’re not exactly starting off on the right road in life,” Speer said. “Hopefully someone gets them back on the straight and narrow and they don’t go down this life of crime like this. It’s pretty serious to be sticking a gun in someone’s face.”

Speer said the experience won’t make him carry a gun when he goes walking, but he wants to warn others. He said to always be overly aware of your surroundings when you’re outside walking especially at night.
