TEXAS, USA — As the Arctic Blast dominates the forecast, bringing sub-freezing temperatures through Wednesday, some of you may be wondering what the record for the coldest day in Texas is.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), there was a bitterly-cold outbreak from Feb. 11 to 13 in 1899. This outbreak affected the Southern Texas Panhandle the most, particularly in the little town of Tulia in Swisher County.
The NWS says temperatures dropped to a blistering 23 degrees below zero in Tulia on Feb. 12, setting the record for the coldest day in Texas history.
A few decades later, this record low was tied when temperatures reached the same 23 degrees below zero on Feb. 8, 1933 in Gaines County.
According to the NWS, there have been unofficial reports of even colder weather in some parts of the Northern Panhandle. Some areas in Ochiltree County have been said to have reached 30 degrees below zero, but for now the record belongs to Tulia.
