What to know about driving on wet roads

It rains a lot in Houston, so knowing how to drive in wet weather is a must

HOUSTON — Houston has its fair share of rain, so if you live here, you'd better learn the rules of the wet road.

Editor's note: The above video was published in May, 2024.

First of all, be road ready and have your low beams on so that others can see you and you can also see what you're driving through.

You'll also want to leave extra room between you and that next vehicle.

And make sure to slow down and avoid using cruise control. When we have wet roads, that's a big no-no so that you don't end up hydroplaning or losing control of your vehicle.

Another tip when you're driving on wet roads -- avoid avoid sudden movements.  Know your entrance and know your exit.

Be a defensive driver for the other drivers out there.

And of course, eliminate those distractions. Put down the cell phones. Just have your total focus on the roadways.

Check the curbs for high water levels when you see it inching up, and if you are at all intimidated or see that that's a bad idea, please turn around.

Do not take the chance on driving through any high water conditions, and always stay posted by tuning in to KHOU 11 and checking KHOU.com and our mobile app.
