HOUSTON — Hurricane season goes until Nov. 30 and we are tracking a new area of development in the Caribbean.
Right now, the National Hurricane Center has designated Potential Tropical Cyclone Nineteen off the coast of Central America. The disturbance is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm by Wednesday, making it the 11th Atlantic named to form since September 24, 2024.
This time of year, climatology favors an eventual north to northeast path. However, it is too soon to determine what impacts the system could bring to the eastern Gulf of Mexico, including Florida, the Florida Keys, and Cuba during the week of November 17, 2024.
What we do know is that by Monday and Tuesday next week, a strong cold front will race south and sweep through Texas bringing cooler temperatures. This cold front will keep any tropical development away from Texas. Any impacts to Florida remain uncertain.
Above-average sea surface temperatures and low wind shear will make conditions favorable for development. If you are keeping track of the names at home, you will see Sara is the next name on the list and then Tony.
As an important reminder, hurricane season lasts until November 30 and begins on June 1, 2025.
