Tropical update: Tropical Storm Sara forms in the Atlantic

The National Hurricane Center announced Thursday that Tropical Depression 19 has strengthened into Tropical Storm Sara.

HOUSTON — Hurricane season goes until Nov. 30 and we are now tracking Tropical Storm Sara.

The National Hurricane Center said at 11:46 a.m. on Thursday that Tropical Depression 19 has officially strengthened into TS Sara.

The storm is expected to bring life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flooding to Honduras over the weekend, the NHC said. Sara is the 11th named storm in the Atlantic to form since Sept. 24, 2024.

This time of year, climatology favors an eventual north to northeast path. However, it is too soon to determine what impacts the system could bring to the eastern Gulf of Mexico, including Florida, the Florida Keys, and Cuba during the week of November 17, 2024.

Tropical Outlook

What we do know is that by Monday and Tuesday next week, a strong cold front will race south and sweep through Texas bringing cooler temperatures. This cold front will keep any tropical development away from Texas. Any impacts to Florida remain uncertain.

Gulf Forecast

Above-average sea surface temperatures and low wind shear will make conditions favorable for development. If you are keeping track of the names at home, you will see Sara is the next name on the list and then Tony.

As an important reminder, hurricane season lasts until November 30 and begins on June 1, 2025.
