Storm damage leaves giant cleanup for Houston area

Portions of Kingwood High School flooded on Friday for the first time since Hurricane Harvey.

HOUSTON — Many residents across the Houston area spent Saturday afternoon cleaning up the damage left by a barrage of storms that hit the region Friday into early Saturday morning.

Giant trees smashed into homes, a school was flooded and a young elementary school teacher was killed.

Groves Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Amy Woodeshick, 25, was killed Friday evening along Kingwood Drive in the storm when her car hit a fallen tree.

This was only Woodeshick's second year as a teacher.

“[Woodeshick was] a wonderful person who loved what she did," said Humble ISD superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagen. "It was her dream job.”

Grief counselors will be at the school on Monday for students and staff.

Portions of Kingwood High School flooded on Friday for the first time since Hurricane Harvey. However, the damage was not comparable to Harvey.

Renovations of the school were finally completed in March 2018.

Tile floors and rubber in the gym were installed following Hurricane Harvey to help protect against future flood events.

One Kingwood resident says she is frightened by the speed by which the storms caused the area to flood.

Claudia Losada said she was left stranded when streets began to flood within 30 minutes on Friday afternoon.

“We are so concerned, all the people are talking about it," Losada said. "After 30 minutes and one storm, and the water is so high again. We are so worried about it.”

The roof of a garage apartment in the Heights was crushed when the storm toppled a giant tree overnight.

The couple living inside was unharmed when the tree crashed through the roof of their apartment at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
