HOUSTON — Did your power go out from Hurricane Beryl? You could be eligible for food replacement if you had to clean out spoiled food from your refrigerator or freezer because of power outages.
Check your homeowners' insurance or renters' insurance policy. Under certain circumstances, some insurance policies will pay up to $500 if the power goes out and ruins your food. You should call your provider to check if it applies to you.
SNAP recipients can also get replacement benefits due to power outages. You can call 211 and select option 2 to complete the replacement benefits application.
How long does food stay good after a power outage?
After four hours without power:
- Throw out perishable foods (meat, fish, cut fruits, vegetables, eggs, milk, leftovers)
- Throw out anything with an unusual odor, color or texture
- You can safely refreeze or cook thawed frozen food that still contains ice crystals or is at 40 degrees or below
