HOUSTON — The National Hurricane Center continues to track three systems in the Atlantic, including what became Tropical Depression 2 on Friday.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Depression 2 is expected to strengthen into the season's first hurricane by Sunday as it approaches the Windward Islands. Right now it has winds of 35 miles per hour and is moving to the west at 21 miles per hour.
The storm itself is more than 3,300 miles away from Houston... as the crow flies.
The forecast track from the National Hurricane Center takes the storm into the Caribbean and strengthens it into our first hurricane of the season. Beryl is the next name on the list.
Because the storm is so far away, it's nothing for we in Houston to worry about over the coming weekend.
It's too early to tell if the system will make it through the Caribbean Sea and into the Gulf of Mexico. If it were to do so, the system is about 10-12 days away.
However, I urge you to watch the weather at least once a day. Keep in touch with the forecast so you don't get caught off guard just in case the forecast changes.
Watch Friday's tropical update here for information on the other two systems.:
As for the other storms in the tropics, both have a 40 percent chance of development.
